Charles Irby Abbitt, Sr., 92, of Victoria, Va., died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va.

He was a retired banker for Virginia National/Sovran Bank. He was born April 12, 1917 in Victoria. Charles graduated from Victoria High School and attended Virginia Tech.

He was active in the Victoria Baptist Church, the Victoria Fire and Rescue, the Victoria Masonic Lodge and served in various capacities in the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Johnson Abbitt; his children, Bonnie A. Branch (Bob) of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Charles I. Abbitt Jr. (Donna) of Asheville, N.C.; his sister Elizabeth A. Bennett of Newport News; thirteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Victoria Baptist Church with interment in the Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Victoria Fire and Rescue or to the Victoria Baptist Church.
