Alma M. Abbott 89, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, in Clarks.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Apfel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Abbott was born on April 25, 1916, to Platt A. and Marie (Stratman) Abbott.

Survivors include numerous cousins and relatives.

She grew up in Chapman, where she graduated from Chapman High School in 1934. She worked at the Ace Cafi as a waitress, then moved to Grand Island in 1937 and worked at the Reno Inn as a waitress. After this she worked in Omaha, where she was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a P.B.X. operator for 20 years and then in Grand Island for 15 years. She was the first female employee at UPRR.

Alma fished and hunted with her brothers in her younger days. She enjoyed raising flowers, especially roses, and collecting figurines of cardinals.

She was a member of the Union Pacific Railroad Old Timers Club and liked all kinds of sports and bowled for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Platte W., Arnold J. and Orville A.
