Andy was fair being Scots-English decent. He had a bit of wanderlust, moving the family to Phoenix Az. at one time, but his wife couldn't tolerate the alkali water, so they moved back to Burwell. He also "batched" for a year and a half near Olivet Kansas, to try his luck at farming there before returning to the family. In Nebr. his farm had sandy soil; the only crop that seemed to grow well was popcorn. He loved to bed down nearly as early as the chickens began roost. He was a gentle man, his grandchildren said they don't recall him ever raising his voice in anger. He was a good musician on the fiddle, and a very strong competitor at horseshoes. He loved to go fishing, & was seldom seen without his beloved pipe.
