Dr. Andrew David Abernethy, Jr., 81, of Eleventh Avenue NW, Hickory, died Sept. 9, 1993, at Frye Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Born July 31, 1912, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Andrew David Abernethy, Sr. and Marie Hendley Abernethy.

A member of First United Methodist Church, where he was past president of Sunday school class. He was a retired dentist. He also was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, a past president of the American Dental Society Area 10, and a member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Clayton Abernethy of the home; a daughter, Jane M. Crosbie of Calfornia; a brother: Dr. Joe Abernethy of Hickory; and two granddaughters, Holly Geren of Alaska and Angie Burnes of England.

The funeral will be conducted by Dr. John Christy and the Rev. Danny Leonard at 3 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pinecrest Cemetery, Granite Falls.

The family will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
