Alfred Abplanalp, 53, of 6509 Elmwood Ave., died Saturday (Mar. 31, 1973) in a hospital after a long illness. Born in Arena, Mr. Abplanalp was a veteran of World War II.

He was employed as a cheesemaker for 20 years in Middleton and later operated the Barber Cheese Factory near Mt. Horeb. Mr. Abplanalp was a Middleton resident for the past 10 years. He married Helen Martinson in 1942.

He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Masons and Verona American Legion Post 385.

Surviving are his wife; daughter, Mrs. Norman Blucher, Madison; son, Charles, at home; his mother, Mrs. Freida Abplanalp, Arena; sisters, Mrs. Harold Blumke, Verona; and Mrs. Jack Erb, Juda; and brothers, Alex, Madison; Walter and Adolph, Arena; and Harold, Mt. Horeb.

NOTE: After leaving the Army, Alfred attended the Dairy Short Course in Cheesemaking at the University of Wis in Madison. In 1946 he bought the Barber Cheese Factory and made cheese there until he sold that factory and purchased the West Middleton Cheese Factory in 1951. He made cheese there until 1972.
