Gerald E. Acklin,77, of Wheeler, passed away at 3:10 p.m. Thursday, Nov 6, 2008, at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Effingham, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Latona Church of Christ with Nate Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery, Newton, with full military rites by Jasper Post 20. Visitation will held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, and one-half hour prior to the service at the church. In loving memory of Gerald, Memorials may be made to the family.
Gerald was born May 29, 1931, in Jasper County, the son of Wayne Maxwell Acklin and Jessie Nevada (White) Acklin. He married Shirley Woidt July 31, 1954 and she survives.
Gerald served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed at Camp Bussac, France, in Bordeaux, France. Gerald was a retired cattle and grain farmer. He raised and showed Registered Hereford cattle. He was a member of Latona Church of Christ and Illinois Hereford Association and a life member of National Hereford Association. He also was awarded Hereford Man of the Year.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Acklin of Wheeler; son, Steve (Crystal) Acklin of Wheeler; daughters, Sherrill (Terry) Conrad of Clarksville, Tenn., and Sharon Helregel of Newton; grandchildren, Jamee Acklin Le'An of Bedford, Texas, Christopher Stanford of Fort Knox, Ky., Heather Conrad of Knoxville, Tenn.. Colton Helregel of Newton, Matthew Helregel of Newton, Nicholas Fewkes of Wheeler; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Melba (Tobias) Kircher of Strasburg and Thelma Flagg of Crystal Lake.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Dan Helregel.
