MRS. GEN. WIRT ADAMS DEAD
REMAINS BROUGHT HERE FROM NEW ORLEANS, DEATH RESULTED FROM A STROKE OF PARALYSIS RECEIVED SEVERAL DAYS AGO FUNERAL AT ST. PETER'S CHURCH
A telegram reached this city last evening conveying the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs. Sallie Adams, wife of the late Gen. Wirt Adams, and mother of Mississippi's State Revenue Agent, Hon. Wirt Adams.
The death of this well-known and highly esteemed lady occurred at the family home in New Orleans from the effects of a stroke of paralysis received several days since. Owing to her advanced age and feeble health recovery from the attack was impossible, and at 5:30 o'clock Friday evening she passed peacefully away.
Mrs. Adams was formerly Miss Sallie Mayrant, member of a prominent South Carolina family, and for many years she resided in this city, rearing a family of four children, three daughters and one son, all of whom survive her. After the death of her lamented husband she removed to New Orleans, where she has since resided.
News of the serious illness of Mrs. Adams reached Jackson three days ago, and Hon. Wirt Adams hurried at once to New Orleans and was at the bedside when the end occurred. The remains were brought to Jackson on the afternoon train from the south and were met at the depot by a large concourse of sorrowing friends who had known and loved the deceased during her long residence here. The funeral cortege went from the depot to the St. Peter's Catholic church where the final obsequies took place, the services being conducted by Father C. A. Oliver, after which the remains were tenderly borne to Greenwood cemetery and laid to rest by the side of her beloved husband. The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers:
Judge S, S. Calhoon, Hon. Marcellus Green, Col. R. J. Harding, Hon. W. H. Potter, Gen. William Henry, Hon. J. J. Coman, A. M. Nelson and A. C. Jones.
Wife of Gen. William Wirt Adams, she shares his monument.
