Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, he was the great-great-grandson of President John Adams and great-grandson of President John Quincy Adams. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1892, practiced law for a while and served as the Mayor of Quincy, Massachusetts, (1896-97). In 1929, President Herbert Hoover appointed him the 44th Secretary of the US Navy. While in office, he promoted public understanding of the Navy's indispensable role in international affairs, plus worked to maintain naval strength and efficiency. After he left position as Secretary of the US Navy in 1933, he served as the Boston Community Fund President (1935-47) and was President of the New York Haven and Harford Railroad in 1951. He died at age 87 in Boston, Massachusetts. He also was a skilled yachtsman, skippering the Resolute to an America's Cup win in 1920. He was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1993 and the US Navy Destroyer USS Charles Francis Adams was named in his honor.
