Major General Albert W. Adams, Delaware National Guard, Retired, 93, formerly of Harrington, DE died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford.

General Adams was born in Laurel, DE on April 22, 1915 and was raised in Dover, DE the son of the late James O. and Caroline (White) Adams. He joined the Delaware Army National Guard in 1934 and became a member of the University of Delaware ROTC. In 1936, he graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelors Degree in Pre-Med. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and continued his career in the Delaware National Guard. He became battery commander at the Laurel National Guard Armory and served from 1941 until 1946 on active duty during WWII. General Adams received his Masters Degree in School Administration from Bucknell University in 1946. During his career in the Delaware National Guard, General Adams commanded at Battery, Battalion, Group Brigade, was Assistant Adjutant General of the Delaware Army National Guard until he retired after 41 years of service in 1975 attaining the rank of Major General. While serving in the National Guard, General Adams had an interest in and began his career in education, teaching from 1939 until 1941 in the Laurel School District. In 1946, he continued his teaching career at John M. Clayton School in Dagsboro, DE where in 1948, he was appointed as Principal of John M. Clayton School, where he served for 12 years. In 1960, General Adams was appointed as the Superintendent of both the Harrington School District and the Lake Forest School District, where he served until his retirement in 1977.

During his tenure, General Adams was a member of the Sussex and Kent County Education Associations as well as the State of Delaware Education Association and served as President of the Chief School Officers. General Adams was instrumental in the establishment of the Henlopen Conference, where he served at various offices and as the executive secretary for many years. He also served as the Chairman of the State Athletic Commission. He was a member of the Laurel Masonic Lodge where he was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Delaware Consistory.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Christine P. Adams in 2007, a son, John Michael Adams in 1969 and a sister, Sarah Nancy Hegeman in 2002. He is survived by 7 sons, Albert W. Adams, Jr. and his wife Judy, of Slaughter Beach, DE; Brigadier General James Adams, Delaware National Guard, Ret., of St. Croix, VI, David Adams and his wife Kenna, of Harrington, DE, Dr. Jeff Adams and his wife Carol, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Bill Adams and his wife Patti, of Dagsboro, DE, Dr. Dan Adams and his wife Pat, of Tucson, AZ, Spike Adams and his wife Susie, of Frederica, DE; 1 daughter, Cathy Tillman and her husband Jeff, of Kissimmee, FL; 15 grandchildren: Albert Adams, III and his wife Deanna, Julie Adams Wagner and her husband Fred, James Adams, Jr. and his wife Lauren, Edward Adams, Dana Adams Sipple, Kelly Adams Sipple and her husband Kevin, Lt. Commander Michael Adams and his wife Lt. Commander Becky Adams, Susan Adams Redmond and her husband Shane, Amy Adams, Scott Adams and his wife Hillary, Andrea Adams Davis, Zac Adams, Hilary Adams Prouse and her husband Don, Jared and Ethan Tillman; 17 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and a nephew.

Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be at 11 am on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Calvary Wesleyan Church, 240 Delaware Avenue, Harrington where friends may call after 10 am. Graveside services will be held at 2 pm in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Laurel, DE.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriot's Way, Milford, DE 19963.
