Born József Ágni in the small village of Nyíri in Hungary to János Ágni and Zsuzsanna Kaselyák, he immigrated to the US aboard the Pannonia in 1904. He soon settled in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where he worked as a maurer. On May 19, 1917, he married Mary Orosz at St. Michael's Magyar Catholic Church of Greek Rite in Perth Amboy. He became a naturalized US citizen in March 1924. He and his wife had four children. He died in 1953.

His gravestone gives 1884 as his year of birth, but his Hungarian baptismal record states he was born in 1883.
