On April 27th 1892, Mary married Wyatt Akin, son of Congressman David Wyatt Aiken and the former Virgina Carolina Smith of Cokesbury, South Carolina. Mary and Wyatt had four children:

Mary Barnwell (1898-1983)
Virginia Caroline (1900-1981)
Wyatt Aiken was elected to the Fifty-eighth Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses fromMarch 4, 1903 to March 3, 1917. During this time, Mary and Conressman Aiken lived in Washington and Abbeville.
Mary Barnhill Aiken departed this life on the 14th of April 1904 in Washington, District Of Columbia. Her remains were returned to her lifelong home town of Abbeville and laid to rest in Melrose Cemetery near her parents.
