James Cox Aikens was one of the Founding Fathers of Confederation. He became the Secretary of State under Sir John A. Macdonald in 1867 until 1873, and again from 1878-1880. He was appointed Minister of Inland Revenue in 1880. He was appointed Lieutenant Governor for Manitoba and Keewatin from 1882-1888. He was called to the Senate in 1896, and died in 1904.
J.W.L. Foster married Emma Aikens, the daughter of Mary Elizabeth and James Cox Aikens (the subjects of the works), in 1916. Emma's sister Mary Jane Aikens married James E. Graham. Their daughter Lucile Graham married Harry Broughton Housser and had a daughter, Jane Housser, now Mrs. Jane Aird. The paintings are in Mrs. Aird's possession in her Toronto home.
