That account further states that Alfred was a teacher in Shelby County for several years and that he eventually moved to the Shelby County town of Montra where he became a justice of the peace. On April 22, 1852, Alfred was married to Melissa Jane Young, said ceremony having taken place in Shelby County, OH, conducted by local justice of the peace Valentine McCormick. Alfred & Melissa first set up housekeeping in Franklin Township of Shelby County but were living in Jackson Township by the time of the 1870 Federal Census. Alfred & Melissa parented five children between the years of 1853 & 1856: Hiram P. Ailes, May A. Ailes, John F. Ailes, Ethan Dewitt Ailes, & Philip H. Ailes. Alfred was duly recorded on the 1860, 1870, & 1880 censuses and he variously reported his occupation as "farmer" & "works in saw mill."
