SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER
Official notification of the death in action in France, on the 2nd inst, of Pte. Alexander Airey (£2990), 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was received by his wife, at 32, Eldwick Street, Burnley, last Thursday
Enlisting in the A.O.C. in May 1915, Pte. Airey soon saw service in France, After five months he was sent back to England and placed in the 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment, undergoing a period of Infantry training. In the following March he was again drafted to France. Last July, whilst attempting to jump a trench, he slipped, and in consequence was con fined to hospital suffering from an inflamed joint.
Before joining up, Pte. Airey worked as porter-messenger in the Burnley Education Office. He is well known at St Cuthbert's Church, where he had been a Sunday school teacher and sidesman of the church. He leaves a widow and one child.
