Amanda Jane "Manda" (Crum) Akers was the daughter of Anderson Pigg Crum and Letitia Akers, natives of Patrick County, Virginia. Amanda was the 6th born of 8 children: William Henry Clay Crum, Nathaniel Anderson Crum, James Wesley Crum, a daughter (d.y.), George Washington Crum, Amanda Jane (Crum) Akers, Mary Elizabeth (Crum) Howard and a son who died at birth along with his mother. Amanda was born and raised in Moniteau County, Missouri on her parents' farm.

Amanda married James A Akers, the son of William Wesley Akers and Jane Steele, the former a native of Virginia and the latter a native of Kentucky. Amanda and James Akers were married March 30, 1866 in Moniteau County, Missouri. They had no children. James was a life-time farmer in Moniteau County.
