Sally (Aldrich) Adams, 95, of Medfield died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at the Thomas Upham House, where she had been staying since suffering a fall at her home in late January. Sally’s mind was sharp to the very end, despite physical frailty and diminished sight and hearing.

She was the wife of the late Dwight E. Adams, who died in 1998.

She was born in Lowell to Frank Shaw Aldrich and Anna Stevens Aldrich. She graduated in 1939 from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she was active in many student organizations and was a commencement speaker.

Sally married Dwight Adams in Medfield’s First Parish Unitarian Church on October 2, 1943. In World War II she accompanied her husband during his service in the U.S. Navy in Key West, Florida, and in the Panama Canal Zone. After the war they lived briefly in Milo, Maine, before moving to Medfield in 1947, where they raised two sons.

Sally was a free-lance writer whose articles, poems, and fiction appeared in The Boston Globe, The Christian Monitor, Down East Magazine and many other publications. From about 1964 to 1972 she was the Medfield correspondent for the Quincy Patriot Ledger, covering town government and school news and writing feature articles. For many years she was also an active member of an informal Medfield writing group.

Sally was known for her wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed a bon mot, a well-turned phrase, witty repartee, and elegant prose, whether hers or someone else’s. In her later years, recorded books brought her great pleasure.

She was a long-time member of First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. About fifty years ago she and her dear friend Betty Temple co-founded the Friends of the Medfield Public Library. Many years ago, she was a Library Trustee. She was also a member of the Medfield Historical Society; the Smithfield (RI) Historical Society; and the local Colby Alumnae Club. She also served on a committee that successfully rallied support for building the high school on Pound Street after the town meeting had turned it down.

She is survived by two sons, Roger (and his wife Diane) of Alexandria, Virginia and their daughter Rebecca of Arlington, Virginia, and Joel (and his wife Mary and children Brett, Spencer, Celia, and Caroline) of Media, Pennsylvania.

There will be a memorial service at First Parish Church, 26 North Street, Medfield. The service will be led by former Medfield resident and close friend the Rev. Fayre Stephenson and by the Rev. Richard Stower.
