He was the only native-born Jew among Atlanta's male antebellum pioneers. he was the grandson of a Revolutionary War officer and lay rabbi of Sephardic descent. He settled first in Vicksburg, MI, then in Athens, GA, before he came to Atlanta in 1848. He worked as a RR engineer, and then opened the town's first drugstore. Alexander also brought the first carload of ice to Atlanta, and opened the first soda fountain.
