FRANCES (ALGER) BOYER , 83, member of a prominent family in Michigan politics and the widow of Harold Boyer, a retired General Motors Corp. vice-president, died Monday in her Grosse Pointe Farms home. Mrs. Boyer was a society hostess who was dedicated to public service. She was the sister of former Michigan Secretary of State Frederick M. Alger Jr., who also was President Dwight Eisenhower's ambassador to Belgium. Her grandfather, Gen. Russell Alger, served as a Michigan governor, U.S. senator and U.S. secretary of war during the Spanish-American War. Mrs. Boyer, a Detroit native, volunteered for Red Cross work during World War II and served for several years on the board of trustees of Franklin Settlement. She was a member of the Junior League of Detroit and the Tau Beta Association, a social service sorority. Friends and relatives said she thrived on throwing parties, favoring small, intimate suppers with relatives and friends on Sunday nights in the pool house of her Grosse Pointe Farms ho me. She is survived by her daughters, ___ sons, and 10 grandchildren. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit.
