Green-Wood Cemetery
Section 56, Lot 499.
This is a most unusual spot. This hilltop lot was purchased by Columbia College, (formerly Kings College, now Columbia University) in the 1840s. Aside from the 7 individuals memorialized on the 6 individual memorial stones, over 600 individuals rest here, most of whom had donated their bodies to scientific research. They are memorialized on a single stone inscribed:

IN MEMORY OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHOSE BEQUEATHAL TO COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ADVANCED MEDICAL SCIENCE.
IN LUMINE TUO VIDEBIMUS LUMEN
[The Latin phrase is the Columbia University motto, and translates as: “In Thy light shall we see light. Though the phrase is rendered in uppercase on the stone, when it appears in sentence case, “Thy” is capitalized, meaning that it refers to God’s light.]

Others memorialized here on individual stones are (with burial dates):
FENG: Hsio Min, 2/25/1974.
JACKH: Ernest, 8/19/1959.
MALLISON: David Ledyard, 9/7/1858.
PFISTER: Joseph, 8/24/1948.
SCHULZE: Georgette and Henry L, both on 3/2/1965.
WEEKS: Stephen Roe, 9/19/1890.

The “death date” on this memorial page is actually a burial date, which may have occurred a year or more after the death of the page dedicatee. It is not possible to determine, in the case of those not memorialized by name, whether or not they were among those who donated their bodies to medical research.
