From the Scott County Argus for Jan. 7, 1916: "Word was received here Tuesday of the death Sunday of James P. Allen at his home in White Bear, following an illness of three weeks with the grip. He was 71 years of age and was a native of Indiana, coming to Shakopee in the early 50's. Mr. Allen was a son of the late John B. Allen, for many years a resident of this locality. Deceased was captain of Co. L 1st Minnesota heavy artillery of which his brother Harrison was lieutenant. Shortly after the Civil War he opened a drug business in St. Paul and was one of the best known pioneer druggists of this state. Three years ago he sold his store and since then had engaged entirely in the manufacture of his own medicinal remedies. He leaves his wife and one son, Chas. W. of White Bear; a sister, Mrs. P.L. Uttley of Minneapolis; and one brother, Harrison Allen of Hastings. Deceased was a brother to the late Mrs. Abner Riggs of this city. Private funeral services were held Wednesday at the chapel in Oakland cemetery, only members of the family being present. Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Brooks of this city went down to be in attendance."
