Born on June 3, 1938 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Velma McKinney Allen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers; Edward L. Allen and Bobby Allen and his son-in-law; Bruce Hugh Hawkins, Jr.
Dennis Allen was a life long member and deacon of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church. He started in his family business of carpentry at age fourteen. His carpentry skills were passed down from his grandfather to his father and to him. The Allen family has been in the carpenter business in access of 100 years and Dennis was proud to be a part of that rich heritage. In his spare time he enjoyed wood working and making furniture.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife; Phyllis Edwards Allen; his daughters; Vanessa Hawkins of Gray, TN and Sharon DuPree and husband, Darren of Tampa, FL; his brothers; Ben Allen of Jacksonville, FL; Bud Allen of Augusta, GA; Terry Allen of Burnsville; Phillip Allen of Marion; and Joe Allen of Salisbury; his sisters; Jean Hollifield of Marion; Joyce Blankenship of Conover; and Glenda Cox of Greensboro; his granddaughters; Ashley Burleson and husband, Nathan; and Allison Hawkins; his grandsons; Joshua and Tyler Dupree; his great grandson; Zander Burleson; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
The funeral services for Mr. Dennis Allen will be conducted on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev's. Matt Mills and Sibbald Lambert officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm at the church. Interment and Graveside services will be at 11:00 am Friday, April 12, 2013 in the Grassy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
