Mr. Charles Anderson Allen, 90, resident of Archdale, died February 6, 2017 at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center.

Charles was born December 3, 1926 in Detroit, MI, a son to the late Walter G. and Lena MacDonald Allen. He had a 23 year career in the U.S. Navy where he served in WWII, the Korean War, and received several distinguished awards and commendations such as, the Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. Following retirement, he pursued a second career path, obtaining a degree in landscape design and working as the Engineer Director for the Norfolk, Virginia Botanical Gardens. He retired from there 18 years later. Charles was a lifetime mason and, while living in this area, was a member of Archdale United Methodist Church and served as former president of both the Archdale/Trinity SerCo Club and the Creekside Homeowners Association. His wife, the former Betty Patterson, preceded him in death in 2011. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded by a daughter, Sheron Deal.

Surviving is his son, Charles Allen; his daughter, Patricia Wallin and husband Gordon; two grandsons, Jonathan Charles Allen and Patrick Charles Wallin; two granddaughters, Ashley Kay Wittorf and husband Robert and Cheryl Deal Meadows; and great granddaughter, Anna Kay Wittorf.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Rev. Harold Shives officiating. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
