GREENSBORO - Mr. Battle Smith Allen, 91, of Greensboro, departed from this life
Tuesday morning, December 2, 2008, at the Blumenthal Nursing & Rehab Center.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 4, at
Lawndale Baptist Church, 3505 Lawndale Ave., with Rev. Joe Giaritelli and Rev.
Marion Boling officiating
Mr. Allen was born on November 4, 1917, to the late Melvin McMaster and Linnie
Clyde Smith Allen, in Chesterfield, S. C. and grew up with four sisters and five
brothers. He was proud to be a Veteran of the Second World War, serving in the
Pacific Theater of Operation as Squadron Combat Intelligence Chief of the 20th
Bomber Command, U.S. Army Air Corp. Returning home, he worked for 36 years for
The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A & P). He retired as a district
supervisor for all stores in the Triad area of North Carolina. He later
consulted and worked for the Bestway Food Stores and Jim North Florist. He
served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at the First Baptist Church,
Durham, N.C. and later as treasurer of Lawndale Baptist Church, Greensboro, N.C.

Bill loved to travel whenever he could. He made it a point to visit every state
east of the Mississippi River. He and his family could be found each summer at
Ocean Drive Beach where he enjoyed all that the South Carolina coast has to
offer. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to
all who knew him.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his cherished wife of 40 years, Nancy
Eugenia Sullivan Allen; young son, Battle Eugene Allen; sisters, Ottis Dabbs and
Margaret Haigler; brothers, Dozier Allen, Jack Allen, and Gene Allen.
Those left to cherish Bill's memory include two children, William Melvin Allen
and wife, Linda of Greensboro, Barbara Anne Allen of Apex; "his" two beautiful
granddaughters: Whitney Catherine Vineyard and husband, Brad of Charlotte and
Kimberly Michelle Allen of Raleigh; special friend and companion, Jewell
Thompson; two sisters, Ruth S. Meyers-Gordon, and Helen Cannady, both of
Clinton; two brothers, Ethan Allen and wife, Faye of Burlington, and Laland
Allen and wife, Edith of Garner, and many nieces, nephews, friends and
neighbors.
The family will receive friends from 1 until l:45 p.m. Thursday, December 4, at
the church.
The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff members
at The Carriage House Assisted Living Center and The Blumenthal Center for the
care given to Bill over the last few months.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Lawndale
Baptist Church Building Fund or the American Cancer Society.
