On 1 Dec 1861 at age 18 he enlisted in the Union Army. He was mustered out on the 10th. He re-enlisted on the 20th of Dec 1863. He served as a Private in the 19th Massachusetts Infantry, Company H. He was taken prisoner 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania, Virginia and was in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was paroled 26 Feb 1865 and mustered out 22 Jul 1865.
He returned home to Lynn, married in 1866, and had two daughters. He worked in the shoe manufacturing industry almost all his life. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post #5, in Lynn. In later years he rode in open cars in the local Memorial Day parades.
He has living descendants (2013).
