E.C. ALVORD, 68, CAPITAL LAWYER
TAX SPECIALIST AND EX-AIDE OF GOVERNMENT IS DEAD
WASHINGTON, Jan. 16—Ellsworth Chapman Alvord, corporation lawyer and a former Government official, died tonight in Palm Beach, Fla., his family announced here. He was 68 years old.
Mr. Alvord, a 1917 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, received a law degree in 1921 from Columbia University and was admitted to the New York bar.
He entered Government service, also in 1921, as a legislative counsel in the Senate and, later, in the House. From 1926 until 1930, he was a special assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury.
Since 1930, Mr. Alvord had practiced law here, first with Donovan, Bond & Alvord and, since 1934, in Alvord & Alvord, which he established with his father, Elias Chapman Alvord, who died in 1942.
The firm conducts a general civil practice and specializes in tax, tariff, securities issues and corporation matters.
Mr. Alvord was director of the Crown Drug Company, the General Dynamics Corporation, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc., the State Loan and Finance Corporation and Jonnell Gas, Inc.
He contributed articles on legal subjects and on Government finance and taxation to periodicals.
Mr. Alvord was chairman of the committee on taxation and a trustee of the United States Council, of the International Chamber of Commerce, Inc., a vice chairman of the chamber's commission on taxation, a trustee of the Tax Foundation, Inc., a member of the advisory council of the Tax Institute, Inc., tax counsel of the American Mining Congress and a member of the committee on taxation and depletion of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America.
He was a member of the board of visitors of Columbia University Law School and a member of the Law School Fund. Mrs. Alvord was also chairman of the board of trustees of Northland College in Ashland, Wis.
One of his principal philanthropies was the Alvord Foundation here. He was president of its board of trustees. He established it in December, 1937, to advance educational and church work.
The foundation's principal beneficiaries have been colleges, outstanding students and churches, including the First Congregational Church here, where, in 1957, Mr. Alvord established the Miriam L. Alvord Chapel in memory of his mother.
Mr. Alvord is survived by his widow, the former Katharyn McLean Watson; two sons, Ellsworth Chapman Jr. and Robert Watson Alvord and two daughters, Mrs. William Richard Loweth and Mrs. Henry Remsen.
