Retired Command Sergeant Major James Basil Ambrose, 83, of Acton, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Corinth, Mississippi.
Mr. Ambrose was born in Pine Grove, Mississippi, on July 20, 1925. He graduated from Michie High School in 1943. He married Azalee Whitehurst on April 30, 1944, at the Foote Street Church of Christ in Corinth. They lived in Memphis and were charter members of the Macon Road church of Christ, where he was also an elder. Mr. Ambrose was a letter carrier with United States Postal Service for 32 years and served with the United States Army Reserves-330th General Hospital for over 35 years. He managed the talent shows and the agriculture exhibits at the Mid-South fairs. He was a Boy Scout Troup leader, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a bass singer on the weekly "Words of Life" television program. He was devoted to the Lord, his family, and his country. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, carpentry, farming, and traveling with family. After retirement, he and his wife returned to Acton and became members of the Foote Street congregation of the church of Christ. Mr. Ambrose served on the Board of Directors of Pine Vale Children's Home until November 2005.
Mr. Ambrose was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Ambrose; sister Geraldine Berry; grand-daughters Annie Brittain and Grace Ambrose; brother-in-law Barnett Brice Whitehurst; and sisters-in-law Bernice Barnes and Janet Ragland.
Mr. Ambrose is survived by his wife and their four children: Gweneth Smithers (Martin) of Huntsville AL, Sidney Bentley (David) of Searcy AR, Janet Gelsinger (Thomas) of Valparaiso IN, and James Harvey Ambrose (Janet) of Homer AK. He is survived by these grandchildren: Barry Bentley (Sheri) of Searcy AR, Molly Bolger (Tim) of Nashville TN, Virginia Harmon (Bryce) of Cut Bank MT, Captain Carol Ambrose (serving in the Netherland), Elizabeth Bentley of New York City, James Joseph Brittain (Stephanie) of Livingston MT, Warrant Officer James Almus Ambrose (serving in Iraq), and Azalee Brittain of Valparaiso IN. He is also survived by great grandchildren David Ambrose Bentley, James Russell Bentley, Anna Bolger, Evelyn Ambrose, and James Nicholas Ambrose; sister-in-law Thelma Whitehurst; brothers-in-law Woodrow Berry and Charles Ragland; and many nephews and nieces.
