Memorial Saturday for Dr. Ada D. Ames

Memorial services for Dr. Ada DeWitt Ames, member of a husband-wife baby delivery team for more than three decades, will be held Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Dr. Ames, a native of Salinas and a descendant of California pioneers, died last Saturday in a San Jose convalescent hospital after a long illness. She was 91.

Dr. Ames was graduated from San Jose Normal School, now San Jose State University, in 1903 and became a teacher, working in schools in Sacramento and then Campbell.

In 1912 she decided to become a doctor and entered California Medical College in Los Angeles, predecessor of the University of California, Irvine, Medical School. She became a general practitioner and married an obstetrician, Dr. Monroe Ames.

Together, they delivered babies for more than three decades in the Los Angeles area. Dr. Monroe Ames died in 1941.

Dr. Ada Ames' grandparents, John Burland and Victoria Hudson Burland, came to the Watsonville-Castroville area in 1850 by covered wagon from White Pigeon, Mich., according to a member of the family.

Burland was killed with a shot in the back, and his slayer never was found.

Dr. Ames returned to Santa Clara County 21 years ago after her retirement to live in San Jose with her daughter, Prof. Ada May Ames, a lecturer in biochemistry at SJSU.

Burial will be alongside her husband in Hollywood Cemetery in Los Angeles.

The memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church, where Dr. Ames was a member of St. Cecilia's Guild for many years.
