Gladys Andersen, 77, Lake Benton, died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Homestead Place in Lake Benton.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 28 from 3-6 p.m. with prayers at 4:30 p.m. at Hartquist Funeral Home, Utoft-Johansen Chapel, Lake Benton.

A memorial service will be held Monday, December 29, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton.

Interment will be in Memorial Hill Cemetery, Lake Benton.

Gladys Marie Andersen was born March 29, 1931 to Wilhelm and Marie (Kruger) Hamer in Lake Benton. She was baptized on June 27, 1943 at Lake Benton Methodist Church and confirmed there on June 9, 1946. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school in Drammen Township through the eighth grade and later completed her GED.

She married Walter S. Andersen on March 28, 1948 at the Lake Benton Methodist Church. She worked as a dietary aide in Ivanhoe and in 1978 the couple moved to Fort Worth, Texas. She continued to work in various hospitals in the Fort Worth area. She also worked in maintenance at Wayside Middle School in Forth Worth. She retired in 1996. Following Walter's death in 2005, she returned to Lake Benton and made her home at Benton Valley Manor. In September of 2008 she was diagnosed with lung cancer and she moved to Homestead Place.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton and a member of Lake Benton American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Jerry (Arrie) Andersen, Mary Ester, Fla.; Richard (Linda) Andersen, Grandview, Texas; Arnie (Suranee) Andersen, Burleson, Texas; Diana (Randy) Nielsen, Tyler and Darla (Randy) Gilland-Brown, Fort Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four brothers, August Hamer, Hendricks; Earl (Shirley) Hamer, Brookings, S.D.; Bill (Linda) Hamer, Brookings and Ernie (Janice) Hamer, White, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter and two brothers, Herbert and Carl.
