Capt. Max Anderson Is
Killed Friday Night in
Training Mission Crash

Air Force Captain Maxwell L. Anderson, 26, son of Pana High School instructor and Athletic Director and Mrs. Vernon Anderson, 506 East Third street, was killed Friday night when his jet fighter crashed on a gunnery range in California during a night training mission.

In the aircraft with Anderson and also killed was Captain Delmar L. Rieger, 33, of Hiawatha, Kansas.

Captain Anderson was assigned to George Air Force Base with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing.

The crash, according to authorities, happened on the Leach Lake gunnery range, 50 northeast of Barstow, Cal.

Captain Anderson's plane, a Phantom F4D, part of a 2-aircraft formation, was described as on a routine night training mission when the accident happened. A member of the family said Sunday they had been told at the time of the accident the plane was on a simulated bombing or strafing run and the aircraft failed to pull off target.

The crash scene was described Sunday night by an information specialist, attached to George Air Force Base, as about 100 miles from the base in a remote area.

According to a member of the family the crash happened shortly before midnight Friday. The family was notified early Saturday morning by Air Force representatives from Scott Field.

A board of Air Force officers has been appointed to investigate the accident.

Captain Anderson was graduated with the Class of 1961 at Pana High School where he participated in football, basketball and baseball. He was a popular member of his class and was known by all as "Max." He was a member of National Honor Society and class orator his senior year. He was also an outstanding musician during his high school career. He was accomplished on both the piano and clairnet and served as President of the PHS band his senior year.

Following graduation from Pana High School, he became Pana's first Air Force Academy appointee and graduate. He entered the Academy in June of 1961 and was graduated in 1965.

At the Academy he was a member of the Air Force Academy Chorale for 4 years. He was president of the organization his senior year. He served as accompanist at time for the chorale He was also a member of the protestant choir.

Captain Anderson also participated in football, hockey and boxing for his squadron at the Academy.

From the Academy, he went to Webb Air Force Base at Big Springs, Texas, pilot training. He received his wings in September of 1966, and then was assigned to George AFB, Cal., for training in F4's (Phantom).

He then was assigned to Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola in '67 and from there performed temporary duty at various points within the United States.

In January of 1968 he was assigned to duty in Korea. While serving there he was promoted to the rank Captain. Captain Anderson returned to the states and Eglin Air Force Base in August 1968. Last fall he was sent to George Air Force Base, Cal.

Captain Maxwell L. Anderson was born in Pana on Feb. 25, 1943, the son of Vernon A. and Virginia Sherill Anderson. He is survived by by his parents, a brother, Michael of Pana and a sisters, Mrs. Alan (Sherill) Ashton of Amherst, Mass.; and Jane Marie, at home.

Captain Rieger is survived by his wife and 2 children of Victorsville, Cal.
