Born in Messina, Sicily, Mr. Ando moved to Argentina in 1949. There he met and married Elsa Gonzalez in 1955, living there with her until the couple moved to Staten Island in 1965. Working in construction and building his whole life, Mr. Ando focused on masonry in Staten Island, working for Holly Hill Construction Company, retiring in 1976.
According to relatives, Mr. Ando was a friendly neighbor who spent so much time in his garden and talking to people on the street that he earned the nickname "Mayor of Nugent Avenue." He also enjoyed barbecuing and doing work around his home.
"He adored his family and his grandchildren," said his daughter, Nancy Levoyce. "They were the most important aspect of his life."
Mr. Ando is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Elsa Ando; a brother, Nino Ando; a sister, Lucrezia Sturiale; two daughters, Maria LaManna and Nancy Levoyce; one son, John Ando; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Monday from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach.
