Martha Jane Andrews was born in 1834 in Ohio. She was a daughter of Henry Andrew and Sarah Anderson. In Waupaca County, Wisconsin, on July 2, 1856, she married Jabez Brooks. They had two daughters, Florence B. and Emma Jane, each born at Oshkosh, Winnebago, Wisconsin. Sadly, Martha died at the age of 32, on January 28, 1867. Knowing that she was desperately ill, she had written her will on December 15, 1866, signing it in shaky penmanship. She named Jabez her administrator and gave him full power to manage her cash and real estate so that it would grow in value over time. She then requested that he distribute the principal of her personal and real estate to her two daughters equally when each reached the age of eighteen. Jabez was instructed to keep any interest generated in his investments of his wife’s estate. The probate record indicates that Martha owned 160 acres within section 22 at Buena Vista township in Portage County, Wisconsin, worth $200. She also had $500, in cash and personal assets. Jabez’s signature, shown above, was written at the hearing on February 6, 1867. Martha is buried in Brooks Cemetery outside Oshkosh, but her grave marker is submerged and no longer visible.
