According to a New York Times article, Hamlin was secretary of the Arlington Chemical Works. He had struggled and failed in other business pursuits and his brother, John Emory, who owned the company had given him a job.
Hamlin was killed by a bomb at his office that had been placed under his writing desk. The crime was never solved.
