Captain David Dyer Ansel, USN (ret) died on March 7, 2013 at home. Captain Ansel was born in Annapolis on July 22, 1924, the son of Rear Admiral Walter C. Ansel and Eleanor Dyer Ansel. While growing up he lived on both coasts of the United States and overseas in China and the Philippines. He attended St. James School in Hagerstown, MD, graduated from the Naval Academy in the Class of 1947, earned a degree in Aerological Engineering from the U. S. Naval Post Graduate School and attended the Naval War College. In over 25 years as a surface warfare officer, Captain Ansel served on various ships in the Atlantic fleet. He was an instructor at the Naval Destroyer School in Newport, R.I in 1961; was stationed in Saigon, Vietnam from December 1967 to January 1968; and served on the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

Captain Ansel retired in Annapolis in 1972. He and his wife, Anne France Ansel, celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary last June. Captain Ansel loved sailing, particularly on the Chesapeake aboard his various boats, all named "Miss Anne." He and his wife took a long sailing trip down the inland waterway in 1986, and Captain Ansel sailed with friends to the Caribbean on several occasions. He had also a life long love of tennis, which he played on courts around the world. In addition to his wife, Captain Ansel is survived by his four children and their spouses: Caroline Ansel (Gary Litchfield), Eleanor Kennedy (Donald Kennedy), Ruth Ansel (Blair Ferguson), and David D. Ansel, Jr. (Karen Aleman-Ansel) and seven grandchildren: Daniel and Anne Williams; Eric Elster; Annabel, Thomas, and Jane Ferguson; and Emily Ansel.

Services will be held at St. Andrews Chapel, U. S. Naval Academy on March 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
