Irving Louis Apgar, 74, Was CEO; Had Served With U.S. Coast Guard Irving Louis Apgar, 74, of Westfield died on Saturday, March 10,2001 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical
Center in Plainfield. Born in Plainfield in 1926, he
grew up in Bound Brook before relocating to Westfield in 1954. Mr. Apgar had been the Chief Executive Officer at Apgar Brothers Motor Transport in Bound Brook since 1972 and a partner with the company since 1964. He had been
with the company for 47 years. He attended the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.,from 1944 to 1948. Commissioned as an ensign in 1948, he retired as a Lieutenant in 1954. Mr. Apgar served in the Coast
Guard on sea duty and later as Chief Communications Officer in the New York District Office for six years.
He was a Past President of the Westfield Jaycees and a Past President and current member of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association. In addition, he was a past member of the Men's College Club of Westfield and a Past President
and current member of the Bound Brook Rotary Club.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou McCredie Apgar; a daughter, Elizabeth Smith of Schoharie, N.Y.; a son, Douglas Apgar of Edinboro, Pa., and five grandchildren. Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, March 14, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad
Street in Westfield, with the Reverend Victoria Ney of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield officiating. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westfield Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson Street, Westfield, 07090. March 15, 2001
