DOCTOR APPLEGATE PIONEER IN STATE---For a Number of Years He Practiced Profession in Tulsa---Died in Wagoner

The following from a Wagoner, Oklahoma, paper gives a brief sketch of the life of Dr. Andrew J. Applegate, for many years prominent in the medical fraternity in this state, and one of the pioneer doctors and physicians of Tulsa. Doctor Applegate after leaving Tulsa moved to Wagoner, where he lived until death, but a few weeks ago, claimed him at the age of 91 years.
Andrew J. Applegate was born July 4, 1825, at Berlin, Germany, and came to this country when a young man, locating first in Ohio, afterwards moving to the state of Iowa, where he studied medicine and was a graduate from Keokuk Medical college.
At the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in Company 1, Seventeenth Iowa cavalry, serving until by reason of wonds he was discharged, returning again to Iowa and changing his residence to different places.
December 18, 1889, he was united in marriage to Linne E. Hey and from that union two children were born. Vera, the daughter, now Mrs. Lawrence Price, in 1898, and Vernon in 1901, who died in infancy. Doctor Applegate died October 20, being in his 92nd year.
Doctor Applegate came to Wagoner in 1897 and had lived a retired life since, tho he was very active and took a keen interest in the affairs of our town, state and nation right up to the time of his death. He was well read and entertaining, had made many trips across the plains in an early day and was the government tribal doctor for the Cherokee Indians nearly fifty years ago and many times has he traveled over this part of Oklahoma, where there was but little trace of the white man.
Doctor Applegate graduated from the medical department of the College of Heidelberg, Germany, in 1848, 68 years ago. That was a long time ago and tho he cherished fond recollections for the fatherland his undivided allegiance was for America, American institutions and the American flag, under which he marched for four long years.
He lived a simple, rugged and upright life and passed life's expectancy of three score and ten by nearly a quarter of a century. It was one of his greatest pleasure during the past year to take his wife, go out on Flat Rock, near Goff's camp, and pick squirrels out of the tallest trees. His familiar figure on our streets will be greatly missed, for he was a friend to all of us and we all held him in the highest esteem.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, attended by many friends and neighbors who came to pay tribute to a kind husband, a loving father and a most excellent citizen.
