UPDATED: Two Lorain residents killed in train crash

EATON TWP. — Dan Draeger said he was shocked when the car in front of him drove through the railroad crossing at the intersection of Avon Belden Road (state Route 83) and Capel Road about 5:10 p.m. Thursday. Draeger said driver, Jawad Al-Nimer, slowed down but went through the crossing despite the gates being down, lights flashing and a westbound train approaching. Draeger said he was about 100 yards behind the northbound, four-door, tan Chevrolet Malibu when it was struck. “My first thought was, why is he trying to go around because I saw the train coming,” said Draeger, of Avon Lake. “The car went flying and spun around a few times.”

Al Nimer, 57, of 3915 Gary Ave., Lorain, and passenger Mufideh Al-Nimer, 78, of 2153 E. 29th St., Lorain, died at the scene, said fire Lt. Kevin Blair. The crash remains under investigation, said Lt. Travis Hughes, Ohio Highway Patrol Elyria post commander.

Draeger said Al-Nimer swerved left just before the westbound CSX train struck the Malibu. It was then struck by an eastbound train, Hughes said. Betty Szudlo, sports editor for The Chronicle-Telegram’s sister paper, the Medina Gazette, said she was two vehicles behind the Malibu and stopped at the crossing. Szudlo said she was behind a van and couldn’t see the collision but saw debris flying in the air afterward. “My first reaction was, what did they just hit? Then it dawned on me,” she said. “Oh my God. It’s a car.”

Draeger said he and other witnesses tried to aid Jawad Al-Nimer who, he said, was thrown about 10 yards from the car. He said Al-Nimer was lying on his back and struggling to breathe. Draeger said he didn’t initially realize there was a passenger in the Malibu. He said Mufideh Al-Nimer was lying between the trains. “I can’t fathom the physics of how she ended up on the other side of the train,” he said.

The westbound train was traveling from Oak Island, N.J., to Chicago, said Kristin Seay, a CSX spokeswoman. The train had two locomotives and 37 rail cars carrying computerized freight.b The eastbound train was traveling from Chicago to Dunkirk, N.Y. It had two locomotives and 124 rail cars carrying coal.

CSX has 21,000 miles of track in 23 states including 4,000 miles in Ohio, according to its website. Seay said it was premature to discuss crash details, but in general, drivers need to be extremely cautious around railroad crossings. She said the average freight train traveling 55 mph needs a mile to come to a complete stop.

However, some drivers drive recklessly around the crossing, said Terry Hupp whose home at 13190 Avon Belden Road is about 50 yards from the crossing. Hupp said some vehicles regularly drive around the gates when they are down and lights are flashing. He said there have been several accidents there since he moved into his home in 2005. "They don’t want to wait,” Hupp said as he stared at the wrecked Malibu. “It’s just not worth it.”

The crash brought back bad memories for James Webb of 13195 Avon Belden Road. Webb, 79, said Scott Webb, his 16-year-old son, was killed when the car he was driving was struck by a train at the crossing in 1987. Webb said his son’s death led to the gates and lights being installed at the crossing.

Footnote: The train camera shows the car did NOT go around the gate, as reported in many news outlets. It broke through the gate. Several witnesses stated the car's brake lights were on prior to its hitting the gate. Further investigation on the car showed catastrophic brake failure.
