John was born on June 7, 1929, in Aurora, Ill., to Albert J. and Sophia (Schwab) Armbruster. He married Mary Ann Gurbal on Oct. 8, 1964, in Aurora. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth (Kenneth Vincent) Armbruster of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Christopher J. (Michelle) Armbruster of Elmwood, Ill., and Thomas A. (Marie) Armbruster of East Peoria; and five grandchildren, Margaret and William Vincent of Raleigh N.C., Taylor and Ian Armbruster of Elmwood and Chad Armbruster of East Peoria.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Ziegler; and an infant son, Michael.
John graduated from West Aurora High School and the University of Michigan. He received an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and liked to say that during the Korean conflict he had "defended the Greater Los Angeles area from enemy attack by air from behind a typewriter."
His professional career was as a trust banker and he was employed in Peoria by the Commercial National Bank, First of America and National City Bank.
He was a master gardener and a volunteer at Common Place, Radio Information Services and Catholic Charities.
John donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Association for medical research.
