Edna A. (Armstrong) Smith, 72, of Merrimac, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the Lester P. Smith who died in 2001.

Born in Lynn on Jan. 13, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Armstrong and Martha (Hamilton) Armstrong Minhan and precious stepdaughter of John R. Minihan. She was a CNA and personal care attendant for many years.

Her enjoyment in life was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her step-father, she is survived by her son wife Sally, dearly beloved daughters, Valerie A. Carnes and husband Daniel, and Beth A. Casey and husband James; her seven grandchildren, Kristofer Smith, Jocelyn Smith Elliot, Monica Fitzpatrick and husband Scott, Tara Carnes and companion Mark Aniello, Therese Plourde, Joseph Casey and fiance Katherine Fandel and Jonathan Casey; three great-grandchildren, Madisyn and J.J. Casey and Brian Rivers; her step-father, John Minihan; three brothers, Norman Armstrong and wife Joyce, David Armstrong and wife Darlene, Arthur O'Keefe and Gina; four sisters, Marie Bixby and husband Cliff, Sandra Noone and husband Richard, Kathy Sevigny and husband James, and Pat Minihan; an aunt, Katherine Hamilton; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Bruce Smith and a brother, John Minihan, II.

ARRANGEMENTS: Callings hours will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac. A graveside service in Locust Grove Cemetery will be held in spring. In lieu of flowers, kindly remit contributions in Edna's memory to Priceless Prom Gowns Program, North Mark Bank, P.O. Box 825, North Andover, MA 01845.
