Religious Figure. Son of Worldwide Church of God founder Herbert W. Armstrong, Garner Ted Armstrong founded the Church of God International after a split with his father in 1978. The financial ramifications of this split prompted an investigation by the California Attorney General; this investigation was halted by the California legislature which, responding to the Church of God case, passed a law barring the attorney general from investigating religious organizations accused of misuse of funds. Armstrong eventually split from this organization as well, forming the Intercontinental Church of God in 1998. To the general public, he was probably best known for his "World Tomorrow" radio program and the television program which bore his name. Armstrong drew attention in his last years for his adamant stands against homosexuality and Islam. He was also known for theological opinions that his critics found unorthodox, including his rejection of the Christian Trinity, his belief that the European Union was a sign of the "End Times," and his recognition of Holy Days not widely celebrated in the Christian Community, including the "Last Great Day."
