Pioneer of the OR Trail
Arrival Sept 1852
Brick Mason by Trade
Daniel was the 9th of 15 children of Andrew Jackson Armstrong and Mary Ann Roberts, born in Pike County, Illinois (probably in Griggsville). On 1 Apr 1852 his family left Illinois, headed to Oregon. Daniel's mother died of cholera along the way. The Armstrong party arrived at the Dalles on 6 Sep 1852, and settled on Sauvies Island, Oregon. Daniel's father died a month after their arrival, leaving several young children to be raised by older siblings.
Daniel married Elizabeth Halstead Bonser (1840-1879) on 3 May 1855, in Columbia County, Oregon. She was the sister of Daniel's brother Marcus's wife.
Children:
Isaac Marion (1856-1928)
Irene M. (1858-1860)
Charles William (1859-1921)
Robert Emmett (1861-1950)
Abigail "Abbie" [Gross] (1864-1888)
Della (1869-1871?)
Elva [Fannon] (1874-1910)
Albert Lawrence (1876-1950)
In 1867, Daniel established a brickyard near Fruit Valley Road and 26th St. in Vancouver, Washington, where he worked making brick with some of his brothers. Most of the public buildings in Vancouver were built of Armstrong brick.
By 1869, Daniel had moved his family south to California, eventually settling in Lake County, near the southeast end of Clear Lake. However, following his wife's death in 1879, the family returned to Washington, settling in Walla Walla, but Daniel eventually went back to California, where he died in Calistoga in 1895.
