Øre Parish records indicate Gladys was born on the Bjerkeset farm and christened 8 Jun 1908 with the name "Gunhild Marie". She was the daughter of bachelor John Johnsen Hovde from Kristiansund and maiden Andrine Martinsdatter Bjerkeset. Her mother arrived in America in 1910 and married Anton Lalim in 1911. Later they sent for Gunhild who arrived in 1915 with her Grandmother Gunhild. In America her name became Gladys Mary.
Gladys married Albert Arndt 29 Oct 1930 in Huron SD and they had two children: Darlene and James.
