Japanese daimyo lord whose death was avenged by the 47 ronin and inspired the legendary story of the 47 ronin. He was the daimyo of Ako Prefecture, and the "takumi no kami" of the imperial court. After being insulted by the high ranking koke (master of etiquette) Kira because Naganori Asano was refusing to pay him any gratuities for his services in teaching him court etiquette, Asano drew out his katana sword and cut Kira. For that assault on a servant of the Shogun, Asano was disgraced and was then obligated under the bushido code to have to commit sepuku ritual suicide. After this, and the conviscation of his lands, all his samurai warrior retainers than became ronin. Two years later, 47 of his samurai warriors, who were then ronin, gathered and committed the legendary assault on Kira's house. After quickly defeating Kira's samurai bodyguards, the 47 ronin's leader Oishii Kuranosuke Yoshio beheaded Kira.
