Charleston Gazette Jan 28, 1928 - Former Kanawha County Resident Dies in Washington; Was Brother of Ex-Governor of W. VA. - James S. Atkinson, native of Kanawha county and brother of the late Governor G.W. Atkinson, died yesterday at his home in Washington. The body will be brought back to Charleston for burial in Spring Hill cemetery. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. The deceased is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Ethel F. Leasure of Charleston, and two sisters, Mrs. James Bibby, of Charleston and Mrs. Kate Pemberton, of Little Rock, Ark. Previous to locating at the national capital, Mr. Atkinson was a resident of Charleston for many years. He was a son of the late Col. James Atkinson, in his day a citizen of prominence in public and business life of Kanawha county, which he served as sheriff in 1861-62.
