Duke was a WW II veteran and was on Omaha Beach. He highlighted the Veterans Day assembly at Mineral Wells School , accompanied by his great grandson, Dakota Fox. He was a member of Liberty Street Church of God. Duke worked as an engineering consultant throughout our area for Jimmie Harper Construction. He was a life member of the Elks, VFW, and American Legion. He spent his high school years as a PHS Marching Band member.
For all that had the pleasure of knowing Duke, knew that he and Betty shared their mutual passion for fishing and included many family and friends to join them at any time. Duke showed to all those he was in contact with through work or play his loving, giving, and his humor.
Duke is survived by his wife of forty-four years Betty Ruth; four children Stephen Jay Atkinson (Deanna) of Fairmont, Jennifer Fountain (Bruce) of Florida, Cynthia Witherspoon (Bart) of South Carolina, and Dianne Lynne of Parkersburg; stepdaughter Sheri McDougle (Barry) of Vienna; grandchildren Michelle, Destyn, Drew, Tristan (Fiona), Christopher, Steven, Lisa, Chip, Sims, Julie, and Eric (Tenille); great grandchildren Dakota, Aiden, Piper, Ryder, Damian, and the newest addition Gaines Alastair Atkinson who will carry on the Atkinson name. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, sisters, and stepdaughter Carey (Hall) Montgomery.
Services will be 1:00 PM Saturday March 25, 2017 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Brian Harrell officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
