Member of St. James Methodist Church of Charleston; copper smith at the Naval Yard.

Attended city schools in Spartanburg and graduated from Wofford College in 1938.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Finley Atwater; two daughers, Sara and Clementina Atater; three sons, Charles F. Atwater, Harvey G. Atwater, and John C. Atwater; two brothers Jack Atwater and Harvey Atwater.
