1909, 13 Feb. "C.L. Ayers" appears in the section "At the Hotels" in the Portland Morning Oregonian. He seems to be living or staying at The Portland, which was torn down in 1951.

1909, 25 Mar. Appears in "At the Hotels" again, at The Portland, again as "C.L. Ayers." Also, in the same issue, C.L. Ayres places a wanted ad for "four neat-appearing ladies for demonstrating and canvassing, something entirely new and high class; $6 per day easily made." Lists address as Portland Hotel. Same ad appeared the next day.

1909, 30 Jun. An ad appears in the Morning Oregonian, "Salary and Commission, good salesman at once, apply to O.O. Koeppel, Princess Hotel…" Koeppel is later involved with a "C.L. Ayres" in an insurance deal (see 22 Sep 1911) for Pacific States Fire Insurance Company. It is possible that, having recently moved to Oregon, Clarence read this ad while looking for work.

1910, 21 Apr. Census lists Cora and "Gail" Ayres, living as boarders with the Frank Neal family at 3145 S. Park Ave., Chicago City. Clarence does not seem to be present. Cora is listed as married.

[Although Asenath Felter appears in the 1910 Portland city directory, Clarence Ayres does not.]

1911, 1 Feb. Clarence Ayres writes to Ambrose, detailing a business venture in Cottage Grove, Oregon (HCT).

1911. Clarence Ayres listed in Portland city directory, living at 427 Weidler (same address as Asenath Felter, who appears in the same directory). His occupation is a salesman for Northwest Securities Co. This address was converted to 617 NE Weidler, which does not seem to be residential today; no house sits on this location.

1911, 9 Aug. Clarence Ayres listed as father on birth certificate of Roy Ayres in Portland, OR.

1911, 7 Sep. Clarence Ayres listed as informant on death certificate of Lenabelle Felter Ayres in Portland, OR. Address is 498 Ainsworth Ave., in Portland [note: in 1934, all Portland addresses changed – the house today is 924 NE Ainsworth – this is based on research of a Portland historian]. The death certificate says that Lena had lived at this address for 5 months, which suggests she moved there in April 1911.

1911, 22 Sep. "C.L. Ayres" listed as part of an insurance deal in Kelso, OR, along with O.O. Koeppel.

1911, 8 Nov. Ambrose Ayres tells HCT that he will move to Portland, OR in December. The article states that "Ambrose Ayres and wife expect to leave the latter part of December for Portland, Ore., where they will make their future home." No evidence that he ever did, and shortly after Ambrose moved to California.

1912. Clarence Ayres listed in Portland city directory, living at 469 Tillamook. He does not appear in the 1913 city directory. The house address today, according to "Ordinance 61325: Street re-numbering report. Full Title: Providing for renumbering of buildings and renaming of streets," is 821 NE Tillamook St in Portland. This house still exists.

1912. Cora files for divorce: Cora Ayres vs Clarence Ayres No 310371

1913, 17 Nov. An advertisement in the Portland newspaper mentions a house in Tacoma for sale or trade for "Portland property." Says "inquire at 427 Weidler," which is the house that Clarence had in 1911. Could this be him? Other references to Tacoma in other documents.

1916, late spring. Garl Ayres listed in North Des Moines (Iowa) High School yearbook as a senior. Were Clarence and Cora with him? No relevant Ayres folks in 1914, '15, '16, '17 city directories. Also Garl is listed in the senior class at https://www.ndmhs.com/pages/yearclass1916.html

1918, 9 Sep. Clarence Ayres' WWI draft registration card has address as 811 W Eastwood Ave, in Chicago.

1920, 5 Jan. Clarence Ayres is listed as living in Chicago in his mother Jane's obit. Clarence and Cora do not seem to appear in the 1920 census.

1923. Neither Clarence, Cora, nor Garl Ayres appear in the 1923 Chicago City Directory.

1925, 28 May. "C.L. Ayres" and "O.O. Koeppel" – same two listed in the insurance deal in Portland in Sep 1911 – appear in several issues of the Polk County (NC) News. The two are listed as District Sales Managers for the Tryon Development Company office in Charlotte, NC. [According to Farrow vs. First National Co. (1930), Tryon Development Co was organized 1 Mar 1925, and became insolvent on 4 Feb 1927. In this case, one gets the impression that Tryon Development Co was perhaps a scam.]

1930. Clarence Ayres listed in Berwyn (Cook), IL census with wife Cora. Address appears to be 6848 32nd Street, Berwyn, IL.

1931. C.L. Ayres, 6846 W. 32nd Street, Berwyn, IL, appears as agent of "Independent Furniture Alliance," at 19 S. Lasalle St. Chicago, IL.

1933, 1 April. Clarence Ayres listed on death certificate as dying in Chicago, IL at 7415 Colfax Ave, Chicago. Wife listed as Cora, informant was son Garl, who lived in Chicago at the time.
