Captain Josiah married Sarah in Salisbury, Essex co, MA, circa 1774. He was born at Hawke (now Danville), NH. Leaving Hawke in 1782 he settled at Andover on Batchelder Hill (named for him). Here, he cleared and cultivated the farm later occupied by his great-grandson, Hon. Nahun Josiah Batchelder. This is one of the few farms in the town which had been kept in the direct descendants of the first settler without ever having been disposed by deed. Tradition has it that Captain Batchelder was a man of great physical strength and energy and force of character. He raised his family of five children to the attainment of the best moral and intellectual advantages of the place and time. He was captain in the old town militia. Josiah was the first in his line to omit the "t" from the family name.
