Major Peaslee Badger was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on April 23, 1753, according to the family bible. A reprint of the Vital Records of Haverhill gives his date of birth as April 23, 1754. On February 22, 1781, Peaslee married Lydia Kelley of Lee, New Hampshire.

Major Peaslee Badger resided at Gilmanton, New Hampshire until about 1801, having moved to that place with his parents in 1763. He was an extensive farmer at Gilmanton and a Major in the New Hampshire Militia. After the American Revolution he moved with his family, about 1801, to Compton, Province of Quebec, Canada, where he went into the mercantile business. In his old age, after the death of his wife Lydia, he returned to Gilmanton and died there.

In 1810, Peaslee had the misfortune to have a tree fall upon his leg while he was 7 miles from home. The leg was broken and because it was broken twice more in about the same place, an amputation became necessary. On September 5, 1814 the leg was removed 6 inches above the knee. We hope that the surgeon was quick and skillful in that day of no anesthetics. From that time, Peaslee wore a wooden leg, the marks of which, in 1909, could still be seen on the stairs of the old mansion at Belmont, New Hampshire where Peaslee used to visit his nephew, the grandfather of John Cogswell Badger.
