Bert Palmer Baldwin (August 14, 1925 - October 4, 2015)

Bert Palmer Baldwin, 90, Milwaukee, Ore., and formerly of Rhododendron and Gresham and Juneau, AK, died Oct. 4 at the Vancouver Veterans Administration Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. at the Cornerstone Funeral Home in Boring, Oregon. Interment will be noon at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. He will be buried alongside his wife, Ruby, who died in 2013.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to local humane societies or the American Cancer Society.

He was born Aug. 14, 1925 in Spokane, Wash., to Grace (Van Dorn) Edith Baldwin, his mother, and father, Charles Henry Baldwin. After the death of his father in 1932, his mother raised him and his two brothers, Charles Edward and William Baldwin. Both brothers preceded him in death.

He married Ruby Swanson on Oct. 27, 1967, in Sitka, AK.

He served in World War II as an Aviation Boatswains Mate on the USS Vella Gulf, an aircraft carrier, and saw action in several South Pacific battles including the Battle of Saipan, Tarawa and Guam. He and his son-in-law's father, Walter Hackett, fought in the same battles of Saipan and Tarawa and were honored with special certificates several years later.

For several years he lived and worked in Juneau, Alaska for several restaurants. He and his wife owned and managed the Tides Motel for several years. He later worked for several years for the Alaskan Marine Highway. After retiring in the 1980s, he and his wife, Ruby, traveled extensively in the Southwest with their mobile home and eventually settled in Rhododendron, Ore.

He enjoyed watching football games on television and attending video dog races. When he lived in Alaska, he enjoyed salmon fishing with friends and relatives.

In 1976, he published a book of his own poetry entitled Northern Highlights and Mary Joyce of Alaska, Poems of Alaska. He had a beautiful singing voice and wrote poetry throughout his life.

His family members held annual gatherings on his birthday year in Rhododendron and at his son's home in Maple Valley, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his mother and two brothers, his wife, Ruby, a son, Gary and a grandson, Max.

He is survived by a daughter in law, Glenis Dove, Helena, Montana, a son in law, Delmont Martinson, Juneau, AK, granddaughters, Dawn and Michelle, Helena, Mont., a grandson, Diosdado Aguas, Rhododendron, Ore., his daughter, Barbara, and husband, Jim, Walla Walla, Wash., a son, Don, and Sue Baldwin, Maple Valley, Wash., a nephew, Robert Baldwin, Logan, Utah, and grandsons, Rick Saling-Marshall, Robert Saling, Thomas Hackett, Jennifer Hackett, Alex Saling, Elizabeth Saling, Wyatt Saling, Mya Foulds and Jade Ann Anderson, Eric and Jarred Schnorr and Ben Baldwin, and several great grandchildren.
