George Hurlbut Baldwin, 84, of Bloomfield, died Wednesday (October 31, 2007). He was born on October 16, 1923 in Bridgeport, the eldest son of the late George Hinman and Beatrice Jones Baldwin.
George was raised in Fairfield, attended Suffield Academy, the Grail School and the Junior College of Connecticut before serving three years in the Navy during World War II. He held sales and cost control positions at Bridgeport Brass Company, Norden, Diamond Shamrock and Brewster Lumber. An active member of the Episcopal Church, George served as Jr. Warden at Grace Episcopal Church, Trumbull, during the 1960s, and as Lay Reader at his church in Bridgeport.
George was devoted to his family. His hobbies included listening to music, playing the piano, antique cars and traveling throughout the Northeast. Litchfield was perhaps his most favorite destination; the family home on West Street where his father was raised and where his dear aunts Katharine, Margaret and Dorothy continued to live, was the site of many happy memories for George and his children as well.
He is survived by his son, George H. (Buzz) Baldwin, II, and his wife, Jill, of Simsbury; his daughter, Penelope L. B. Rebuzzini and her husband, Peter, of Guilford; three beloved grandchildren: Emily L.B. Gates and her husband, Christopher, of Eustis, FL; Reed A. Baldwin of Ashley Falls, MA, and Margaret Kezia (Meg) Rebuzzini of Guilford and a beloved great-granddaughter, Abbie R. Gates. George also is survived by his devoted brother, Harry D. Baldwin of Fairfield.
George was predeceased this year by his beloved daughter, Pamela S. Baldwin, and his brother, Thomas A. Baldwin. The family offers special thanks to the caring staff at Seabury Retirement Community where George lived for the past ten years. A Memorial Service to celebrate George's life will be held at First Congregational Church in Guilford on Friday, November 2, at 2 pm. Burial will be private. Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Trumbull is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Discovery to Cure Program, Yale Cancer Center, c/o Renee Luongo, P.O. Box 208063, New Haven, CT 06520.
